February 28, 2006 -
Hi All,
On behalf of Scion, we would like to thank
everybody who took time out of their busy schedules to make their way to the
Scion Winter Grand Prix event. Almost a thousand Scion owners and their
guests took advantage of a rare opportunity to have the run of almost the
entire F1 Boston indoor go-karting facility. Even nearly an inch of snow did
not deter Scion owners making their way up to the event from as far north as
Maine and as far south as New Jersey.
Attached below are some preliminary results;
we hope to put more info and
event images on the
www.scionvip.com website in the coming weeks (including
top 30 track lap times from each track).
We hope you had as much fun as we did in
putting together this event.
Please continue to check back on www.scionvip.com for area events – including the Scion
VIP @ HIN Boston event in April.
Best,
Scion VIP Event Staff
Scion Winter Grand Prix
Hundreds of Scion owners meet up at F1 Boston
for some winter racing fun
While "Winter Grand Prix" may seem like an
incongruous coupling, that's exactly what hundreds of Scion owners turned
out for on Saturday, Feb 25, at the F1 Boston indoor go-kart facility in
Braintree, MA. With a parking lot full of Scions parked together out front
and almost a thousand owners and their guests enjoying the heated action
inside, the white stuff came down to officially christen the event. But
almost an inch of snow didn't stop those on hand from competing in two
on-track Go-Kart Challenges, two Pit Stop Challenges, and even a trivia
challenge thrown in for good measure.
All in all, everybody had a great time as the
muffled buzz of 40 mph go-karts mixed sweetly with the beats of a DJ mix
coming off the Five Axis Models-built Scion DJ xB – which made its New
England debut during the event. The eye candy wasn't limited to the Five
Axis one-off though, nor the Joe Gallanter-tuned xA and Jay Laub-tuned tC
SEMA Scions holding court in the Daytona Room; the hundreds of customized
Scions from all over the northeast turned the parking lot into the real
source of visual excitement, not to mention an impromptu and rare outdoor
winter car show.
After a hot catered lunch, the action on the
track was supplemented by the Daytona Room Pit Stop and Trivia Challenges.
And while the on track competition was intense - with plenty of
crowd-pleasing spinouts and multi-car incidents – the Pit Stop Challenge
proved that races are also won and lost off the track. F1 Boston pit
stewards monitored the intense competition (conducted on an authentic Grand
Am series race car) and even applied penalties when competing teams
committed critical errors. At the end of the competition, Team Prime and
Team Unrated won their respective Pit Stop Challenges.
Later, it was learned that Team Prime was the
only team staffed by a majority of trained technicians; while perfectly
legal within the event rules, the event staff decided to also recognize Team
Four Off, Four On as Co-First Place trophy and jacket winners in the spirit
of the event. Team NRG Bronx topped the team/club challenge and won Team
Champion honors. Even more surprising though was the tie in the Trivia
Challenge; two second round competitors deadlocked on over ten sudden-death
questions before a tie was declared and both walked away with the first
place bounty – extremely collectible die-cast Binaltech Transformer xBs from
Japan.
At the end of the day, the top three Pit Stop
Challenge teams from each of the two challenges were given their trophies in
the Daytona Room. First place winners also earned custom-embroidered Scion
winter jackets. The biggest moment of the ceremony was saved for last though
as the winners of the Go-Kart Challenge was announced. Buck Viera topped
Track One honors with a smoking best lap of 19.666 seconds while Richard
Brown used a 15.989-second lap for the fastest trip around the Track Two
course – both took home trophies and iPod Nanos for their foot-on-the-floor
efforts. In addition, second and third place runners-up for both courses
picked up trophies and iPod Shuffles.
Whoever said it doesn't pay to go racing
wasn't at a Scion Winter Grand Prix.

The first ever Scion Winter Grand
Prix is set for this weekend, Saturday, February 25th!
We hope you are excited as we are about this event. For
our last communication before the event, we just wanted
to bring you a couple of updates and some important
information about the event.
Limited Competition Spots
Most importantly, please keep in
mind that the competition slots for the Winter Grand
Prix go-kart challenge is limited. In order to ensure a
smooth flow for the competition, racing spots will be
given out on a first come, first serve basis on the day
of the event. RSVPs do not guarantee that you will get
track time. Arrive early to sign up for the competition
spots for your best chance to get on the track. We will
work with F1 Boston to try to get the maximum amount of
people possible into the competition.
New 10:30AM Start Time
One thing we are changing to get
more people on track is the event start time. The doors
for the event will now open at 10:30 AM instead of 11:30
AM for an additional full hour of track time on Track 1.
First group to hit the track will be at 11AM.
Track 1 and Track 2, Pick One
Another feature of the competition
that will allow more people to compete is a one track
limitation for competitors. Since winners will be chosen
from each track separately, racers will not be permitted
to compete on both tracks for the Winter Grand Prix.
While layouts are different for the tracks, both are
equally challenging.
Scion Owner Parking
One of the main goals for this
event is to give Scion owners a place to mingle and
check other Scions. For this reason (and to get some
cool event photos), the main parking lot, which is
limited to about 250 parking spots, in front of F1
Boston will be limited to Scion-only parking from event
opening until 2 PM. If you or a guest is traveling in
another brand of vehicle and arrive before 2 PM, you
will be directed to a satellite parking lot 60 feet from
the F1 Boston facility. After 2PM, the parking lot will
be filled without restriction.
Pit Stop Challenges
As you may have noticed through
updates on
www.scionvip.com, we will be holding a number of
other off-track competitions during the Scion Winter
Grand Prix. The two Pit Stop Challenges will put a total
of twenty teams (of five people each) through the
ultimate pit stop simulation test. Please note that the
sign ups for the Pit Stop Challenges will be conducted
on a first come, first serve basis on the day of the
event – AND – that signups will initially be open to
those not planning to compete or without a spot in the
go kart racing challenge. This is just to ensure that we
get as many as your fellow Scion owners involved in the
activities as possible. A wait list will be maintained
for those competing in the go kart challenge and wishing
to sign up for the Pit Stop challenge. If spots are
available at the time of the competition, they will be
filled from that list first. If you are planning to
compete as a team (e.g. Team ScionNRG, Team Scion
Evolution, etc.), please sign up as a group.
Special Scions on Display
One of the main guest stars of the
Scion Winter Grand Prix will be the Five Axis DJ xB –
making its first appearance in the Boston area. This
transforming xB sports custom, widebody and chop top
work and transforms from slammed xB to a slammin’ DJ
station at the touch of a couple of buttons. But besides
the DJ xB, the Scion Winter Grand Prix will also feature
three specially customized Scions that made their debut
at the 2005 SEMA Show. The list includes the Scion xB by
Fred Chang, the Scion xA by Joe Gallante, and the Scion
tC by Jay Laub. Come check them out and remember to
bring your cameras!
Above All, Have Fun
We’ll do our best to ensure that
your day at the Scion Winter Grand Prix is a memorable
one. Please let us know if there are any questions that
you may still have prior to the event by emailing us at
scion@urbanracer.com or calling 718 279 2202 during
normal business hours. Make sure to check out the Winter
Grand Prix minisite on
www.scionvip.com for past updates, directions, and
other event details. |
February 16, 2006 -
Hi Everybody, The event is fast coming upon us and we wanted to give
everybody more details about the Scion Winter Grand Prix. We
have a big line up of activities and it should be a fun time
for all. Besides the main Go-Kart Competition, the Scion
Winter Grand Prix will also feature two Pit Stop Challenges
and a Scion Trivia Challenge. There will even be a little
video gaming area for those of us bringing younger Scion
fans along with you.
We do want to stress this
though – please note that Track Competition will be limited
by the number of groups F1 Boston is able to process during
the event hours and filled on a first come, first serve
basis on the day of the event. Please note that your RSVP
does not guarantee track time.
We’re
sure that there are plenty of activities and features to
keep everybody busy – including the New England-area debut
of the Five Axis DJ xB that has starred in Scion TV spots

others for to become a Scion Trivia Challenge Champion.

HELPFUL FAQS:
WHAT DO I DO NEXT?
If you have already RSVP'd at www.scionvip.com, just show up at F1 Boston on Saturday, February 25, 2006. The event begins at Noon, but you are welcome to join at any time between Noon and the close of the event at 5PM. Please note that if you plan to take part in the timed competition, it is encouraged that you show up earlier as the finals will begin no later than 4:30 PM (space may be limited based on a first serve basis for the competition depending on participation).
WHAT ACTIVITIES ARE PLANNED?
The main activity will be centered on the Scion Winter Grand Prix - competitors and attendees will be able to drive F1 Boston's adult-sized go karts on one of two F1 Boston indoor tracks during the entire event. Competitors wanting to compete for prizes will then take turns running timed laps on the other track. The racers with the top times will then be eligible to compete in a finals competition where the top 3 competitors’ times will be determined for the Scion Winter Grand Prix podium.
CAN I BRING MY KIDS?
Yes. We aim to make this event family friendly. Due to the performance nature of the go-karts, their use is restricted to licensed drivers 18 years of age and over. Other features of this event won't have such restrictions.
DO I HAVE TO DRIVE MY SCION TO THE EVENT?
We would love to see a parking lot full of Scions (i.e. as many Scions as possible), but it is not required to attend the event (there will be no judged car show at this event).
IS THIS A FREE EVENT?/WHAT IS FREE?
All features of the Scion Winter Grand Prix event are free for Scion owners and their guests. This includes all go-kart activities, food, and refreshments.
WHO IS PUTTING THIS TOGETHER?
This is an official Scion event sponsored by Scion Boston Region and produced by UrbanRacer.Com/URC Media, a third party media and event production company.
